Base for stone/gravel patio

I want to install a gravel patio. Is it better to use limestone as base or sand, or do I need to layer the two prior to putting the gravel down that I'm going to use? Patio area will be 16' x 20' and am planning on a firepit in the middle of it.

Also any recommendations on gravel size? I'm currently looking at using 3/4" instead of pea gravel.

Thanks for any help.

You should always excavate the grounds at least 12to 16 " then install a geotextike membrane. Add 0 3/4" stone, compact stone. Then you are ready to recieve any topping you want.
