Basement Renovation

How do you figure out if it's worth the investment to raise a house off its foundation to improve the basement depth and use. Is this even possible with a hundred year old house?

When it comes to determining if it can be done it isn't as much about the age of the house as it is about the condition of the house. In most instances it is best to get an architect or engineer to come in and tell you what is possible. This can also help you to determine whether it is worth it or not.

Lifting a house and pouring a new foundation requires a substantial investment that can easily travel past the $50000 mark. For a renovation of this magnitude I usually recommend that it is only undertaken if you plan to stay in the house for more than 10 years, otherwise you will never get a reasonable rate of return.

Hope this has helped.

Hi Karen,

What Doug posted above is exactly right. It will be a considerable investment, and only one that should be undertaken if it is going to pay off. With that being said, if you are going to be finishing the basement for a relative or you plan on staying in the house for the foreseeable future, then the investment is well worth it.

An Engineer would have to be involved in the decision making process for this type of an endevour.
