Can I weld my own beams for my own home? I was a certified CWB welder for many years. Or do I have to hire someone?
Hi Dan,
I have done a few additions where steel beams that had to be welded after installation. In all cases they where inspected by a town building inspector who never asked who welded them. I think all they cared about was that the proper size was installed, perhaps go to the Lindsay building dept and ask I assume they will allow you gives your past experience.
Hi Dan,
Your home is your house, you can do pretty much any thing you want but its always good to have a professional opinion to keep things safe.
Hi,
That last guy needs to stay off this site as he is not a professional and is offering an opinion that could result in major damage or injury!
By code and law!! you are replacing a structural member! You have to have the beam engineered! You can use micro lams or steel then it must be passed by a your local inspection authority!! Do you want your house to fall down?? You can weld it yourself but it must have a engineered stamp on it. Here in Alberta it costs 4500-$1,000 to have a engineering firm approve a structural application. It is cheaper for you to buy a proper item...(microlams are the cheapest but are typically 2x12).
Cheers!
