Is it legal to cover up the switches and the cords with a wooden panel (box like)

in my basement? I live in Ontario.

I do not like to see the switches and I do not want my dog to ever touch it.

I do not want to play with fire or break the law.

Yes you can build a cabinet just make sure the electrician can get to it and don't cover up any screws in the panel cover.

Hello Martin,

I have to assume by the photo compared to your paragraph that the switches and cords you speak of are actually the circuit breakers and cables around your main electrical panel? Switches and cords normally refer to other equipment and some of those cannot be located within wooden cabinets, but if you are speaking of the electrical panel, there is no reason why you cannot cover it with doors providing it is fully accessible without needing to be cut AND you have 1 square metre of clear access immediately in front of it without obstruction. Some people seem to think it is ok to put shelves, work benches, washer/dryer, sink, etc immediately in front of the panel, which is not allowed.

Hello Martin,

Yes you can build a box around El Panel. You have to provide free access to El Panel at any time and 1m clearance at the front of El Panel. Ask qualified electrician to help you relocate all wires around El.Panel. That is easy to do in your case.
