Is it ok to dig down 3 feet deep for the deck post in Ontario? Because there's rock underneath the location for the deck post and can't dig down any further.

So many things depend on answering this question properly.

The first is probably is your deck a permit deck being done with drawings if so then you should always consult the engineer.

The frost line is somewhere between 3 and 4 ft I think and the whole point is to cross the frost line which will prevent your posts from moving.

I would guess that a deck has more than one post and more than one locations for load bearing so a situation like the one you're in doesn't seem too serious.

More questions are necessary to ask in order to properly answer.

If you are hitting bedrock after 3ft down you will need to drill 2 holes into the bedrock and place rybar in there, then secure rybar to your 3ft post.

The frost line is at 3 feet. In our company we typically dig all our deck footings and fence post holes 46" to 50" below grade that way we are sure that it is below the frost line given that the frost line may be deeper that 36 inches. In your situation if all the other footings are at the above depth and there is that one footings that cannot be dug any deeper due to the rock circumstance then the 36 inches should be good. I personally think that you can go deeper it just depends on how much more effort you want to put in it as for me I would definitely make the extra effort to go below the frost line!
