I am looking to finish my basement. There is already electrical run on the walls that I want to finish. There is metal conduet attached to the brick wall. Do I have to take that out when finishing the wall or can I build the wall around it? Thanks
Not enough information to this question please show pics on it and then can decide what to do
Code stipulates that any wall in a home that is being finished must contain electrical to meet codes. Any electrical that is to be found inside walls must be run 1-1/4" from the finished surface and/or protected by steel plates so as to not be damaged by screws or nails. So if there is METAL conduit found in walls, you should be ok to bury what is within that range.
Metal conduit it ok but not junction boxes - all the junction boxes must be accessible all the time .
Metal conduit can be covered in - however if there are any electrical connection boxes - they have to be accessible afterwards. If there is any existing wire that does not run through conduit it must be 1-1/4" inches behind the drywall to prevent screws going through it - or protected.
