We are about to finish a basement in an old attached single-family house. What level of insulation does the shared wall require to make this space livable and avoid moisture and mold? What would you recommend for the two exterior walls?
Typically for exterior walls you'll want to use r-13 insulation, fire resistant and mold resistant can be found for purchase, or you can use spray foam insulation as well but for something like that I'd use the fibreglass insulation for the 2 walls
The best way I find is sprayed insulation,it's the best against mould and it's water resistance. Now if that isn't available roxsall insulation is fire proof and will not mould if it gets wet. Then a double layer of dense 5/8 drywall to create a fire wall and oh yes if you use regular insulation then spray foam all the studs to create a single unit.
For exterior walls can use minimum R 22
Always consider factors such as thermal performance, moisture resistance, and fire safety when selecting insulation products. It's also advisable to review customer reviews and product specifications to make an informed decision based on your project's unique requirements.
Fiberglass Insulation:
Owens Corning
CertainTeed
Johns Manville
Mineral Wool Insulation:
Roxul (now known as Rockwool)
Thermafiber
Rigid Foam Insulation:
Dow
Owens Corning
Kingspan
Use a combination of insulation and moisture-resistant materials for the shared wall. A common recommendation is to install rigid foam insulation against the concrete wall, followed by a stud wall filled with fiberglass or mineral wool insulation.
