I finish my basement and I already have R12 on all walls from top to bottom from the builder in year 2010. I want to add R12 between the framing studs to get warmer basement. Can I do it and I'm not going to put vapor barrier behind the drywall as the builder insulation has the vapor. Is this safe to do and avoid mold growth behind the drywall?
Thanks
Not sure what your asking? But if you have batt insulation anchored directly to concrete that is a builders cheapo way to pass final inspection and was done wrong and will get mold. Remove it all!, frame frost walls min. 1/2" from concrete and place rated insulation you want in studs and vapor barrier on warm side. This is code and the proper way to do it, not cheapo work arounds, you will regret it later.
Hello
You can't add R12 insulation to the walls if they're already there because it'll be in a 2x4 stud cavity. And if you put another R12 that'll be R24. So you're going to need a 2x8 wall for that. Unless you're planning to put 2x4 studs on the face of the other 2x4 studs, then you could add another R12 and you should have vapor barrier behind your drywall.
