Our house is 40 years old and we have done some reinsulating and hung new drywall. We want to get rid of our popcorn ceiling but have read that there could be asbestic in older homes.
Can you just put new drywall over exsisting ceiling or can you plaster over popcorn ceiling? Also wondering if you can rent spayer and spray over the top and flaten out? Which is best option for this?
As home is older we were thinking scraping isn't a great option because it could have asbestis.
Looking forward to some answers as we have always had good answers to solutions for home renos.
Hi,
With respect to your comment about asbestos, if you fear their might be asbestos, the proper procedure would be to contact a environmental/remediation company that will test for asbestos in the plaster before completing any work. Due to the age of the home, there is a potential that it may contain it. Depending on their findings, you would follow the proper procedure to remove it.
In regards to your stipple ceiling, you have several options. I'm assuming that it has been painted in the past, therefore scraping it off is no longer an option. Therefore you can either:
1. plaster over top several coats to a smooth finish
2. remove it and install new drywall
3. install new drywall over top (relocating any light fixtures on the ceiling to accomodate).
I hope this helps!
Thank you
Hi Debora,
Couldn't agree more with the above post!
Thanks
Thanks for your answers so far.
I also was wondering about decorative tile over it as I have seen it on the internet. We have painted over our popcorn ceilings years ago with a oil based paint. Do these tiles stay on once glued or do you think they will fall off over time? Of course they say they will stay on but do they?
Looking forward to some more answers.
Hi Debora,
A general answer is yes they should stay on but it is dependent on the following:
Weight/size of tile & the type of adhesive used.
I would follow the manufacturers specs. Also, you can test one tile to confirm.
Thank you
