Roof joist span

Hello,

I started building a shed, 14x13 with mono pitch roof. I have initially bought 2x6x16 for roof joists and was thinking of installing them 12"OC. I am using lumber from Home Depot SPF.

After reading Canadian construction code and seeing that 2x6x16 when installed on 12"OC will have max span between 9' and 13.7' I realize that I have made a mistake and should have bought 2x8x16.

Now, returning 2x6x16 and replacing it with 2x8x16 is an option however an painful one.

From structural and safety point how safe is to install 2x6x16 on 14 feet span?

I live in Montreal and sometimes we can have 2-3 feet of snow on roofs for couple of weeks.

Thanks

Hi Ppyre

A lot of things depend on the pitch and finish of your roof. If you have a low pitch

( Exp: 4/12 ) and if your finishing it with

asphalt shingles than all the snow will stay there and build up. 7 manufactured low pitch

trusses ( at 2'OC ) will do it.

If you had a bit of a higher pitch ( Exp.8/12)

and finish your roof with metal than most of the snow would slide off.

If you do the 12" OC at 14' put solid blocking

in two equally spaced locations to slightly strengthen the span.
