We hired a roofing company to do our roof I was getting an uneasy feeling after they showed up and dropped off their shingles and told me the house would have to be resheeted and then was going the leave the chip board outside over the weekend which was calling for a lot of rain eventually I got sick or getting the run around having shingles sitting on my roof for a week so I canceled the Jan b told him I would pay him fairly I understand about the 20% restocking fee but my question is this contractor charged me 20% of the whole bill after the taxes to me I thought I was paying 20% of material cost can someone clarify. There was no cancellation clause in the quote we signed.

Having the shingles on the roof is not the worst thing. We like to load 3-5 roofs at a time and it can take a week or more to get them all done before we load the next bunch of roofs.

The clip board left out is unprofessional but not worth cancelling a contract over.

Is sounds like the real issue is the sheathing. Get a second opinion on that before you cancel the contract. If it needs to be done then why go to the extra expense.

20% on the materials might be a little low. Your contractor paid to have the materials loaded up there and will pay to have them removed and will likely pay a restocking fee also. I've had to do it and it cost more than 20% of the materials, not to mention a significant waste of his time.

Unfortunately you have 10 daus to cancel a signed contract to receive any deposit back. Is the 20% in writing? Did the contract specify a start date? If it were my company(which we dont work that way) i would xharge the restocking fee for material + 55% of that fee for labor to remove. Unfortunately without stuff in writing it is a question of ethics not legality.

We have a estimate and in there is states 20% restocking fee for returned material but no contract with start dates just an estimate saying it's valid for 30 days and the 30 days ended 10 days before they dropped off materials. I'm really not trying to hose any one just with what he was going to charge me for resheeting the roof it was cheaper for me to get steel on from someone else
