I've been noticing sewer smells in the house for a few years. They are intermittent (from no smell, slight odour to strong) at various times.
2 bathrooms were recently completely gutted and renovated. I am getting the smell in both new bathrooms.
Sometimes in the hallway.
P traps and exhaust fans have been installed.
There is a dry trap in the basement floor which I regularly pour water into. A sump pump was installed years ago.
Plumbers have attended the home but (of course there was no smell when they came.
What might be the cause and who should I call to diagnose the source?
One thing to check is the Toilets, if the Gasket on the base of the toilet was not installed properly you will have a sewer pipe smell leaking into the house.
The best way to determine if the smells are from the sewer system is to do a SMOKE TEST.... A non-toxic smoke is pushed into the sewer system from a source outside the house....Then as the smoke is introduced to the sewer system.. ALL areas of the house inspected with a STRONG flashlight... If something within the house is leaking.. the smoke will appear.. MOST of the time ...(sometimes the smoke test doesn't work due to piping design or belly in the line).. BUT if the person conducting the smoke is knowledgeable ... there are other ways to make it work...
Sometimes the "sewer" smell is OTHER sources such as a decaying critter...
Good luck
