What is the best paint for varnished wood?

I have a pub/bar dining table set that has a varnished wood colour that I don't particularly like. I want to paint over the varnish without sanding. What type of paint do you recommend using? Keep in mind, the table will be washed daily, so the paint has to be strong enough to adhere to the surface without wearing off.

I read something about mineral paint. What are your thoughts? Or is there a better paint you can recommend?

Your feedback is appreciated.

The best paint to use is a water-based acrylic one. If you're using an oil-based paint only use an oil-based primer, not an acrylic one.

Thank you!

Do I need a primer for the acrylic paint?

Sorry but you must do a light sand first with 320 grit it you plan to repaint. Then use a good primer like Benjamin Moore Stix (bonding primer) then use a top quality paint I like advance ( waterborne hybrid (oil) the only thing is the advance takes 30 days to cure properly but this is my go to for trim, doors and you can use this for furniture and cupboards. If you plan to restain you will need to sand Td the varnish so that a gel bas d stain will stick.

Best result is a complete strip to wood either chemical or sanding then prime and paint with a product designed for frequent washing (oil/melamine if you can get it). Let it seal for as long as possible before wetting as well. Any other way and it will crack or peel later if washing all the time.

For a pub/bar table that needs a durable paint job without sanding, I'd suggest using a high-quality acrylic or epoxy paint designed for wood surfaces. These paints adhere well and offer excellent durability, even with daily washing. While mineral paint could work, it might not hold up as well in a high-traffic environment. Prep the surface properly, and consider adding a clear protective topcoat for extra resilience.

I ended up applying 2 coats of primer first, then applied 2 coats of water based acrylic paint, finishing with 3 coats of a satin finish topcoat. It looks great and it appears to be protective and durable.

Thank you all so much for your reply! Each one was very helpful!
