We have an 18 year old ashphault shingled roof that seems to be in good condition except for the bottom rows at the eavestrough, where they are crumbling and breaking off.

Any ideas as to why this would happen or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time

Betty

Hi Betty!

That is usually caused by ice dams and alot of snow on your roof. It can also indicate that there isn't enough ventilation in your attic. You may want to check to see if your soffits are ventilated properly and your gable or roof vents are clear.

Hope that helps.

Hi Smitty,

Thanks very much for your quick reply!

Sounds like a plan and we'll check out your suggestions. We haven't had much snow in Hamilton for the last couple of years but don't get up on the roof much, we are in our seventies and have a 2 storey house, so it could have been happening for a while. I'll post back and let you know what we find.

Thanks again and have a great and safe weekend.

Hi Alissa,

Thank you for your most welcome suggestion.

We have discovered, also been suggested by third party inspection, the damage appears to be squirrel related as it's the same at the peak, we suspect they were using our tree to gain access but they haven't yet found an access point. A few years back we evicted them from our front porch roof and seems like they were trying to move up.

I apologize for the late posting to my original request. We have been tied up with having trees trimmed, asbestos siding removed/replaced and new eaves etc.. This is our first experience with home repairs and it was a much lengthier process finding, asking, reviewing, checking and deciding than we had anticipated. A definite learning experience LOL

Thanks agian to all of you, I appreciate you time and suggestions.
