MedPlus Home Health Care, (Med + - 285 Midwest Rd, Scarborough.) was hired by my family on July 24, 2018 to install some safety recommendations made by an Occupational Therapist, in my mothers home, following a back injury and fall with a broken hand.
Ronny W., the salesperson from MedPlus appeared knowledgeable and confident to do the job, however after 2 attempts, the work proved to be sub par and they displayed a lack of product knowledge. This resulted in wrong parts installed (grab bars were too large) and 6 weeks later the work (Promenaid staircase railing) was still not completed. The owner, Michael S. called it a “comedy of errors”, but, in my opinion, there is lack of competent and trained staff at MedPlus.
When the order was placed, we were advised that it would take 2 weeks for the parts to be shipped and installation completed, which resulted in my mother staying in respite care for an additional two weeks at a considerable expense to wait for the completion of the work.
The first attempt resulted in: a technician not properly briefed on how to install the railing, drilled holes in the wall in the wrong places to mount the railing, installed the wrong size grab bars (drilled into ceramic), and didn’t have all the parts to complete the railing installation.
Ronny W. never explained what happened, that is, how such a simple job could go so wrong, but told us there would be another wait for the parts to arrive.
A sub-contractor was hired in a second attempt to install the Promenaid railing system, it was identified once again that parts were missing to complete the railing installation, and we still had a damaged wall and more delays.
We were rapidly losing confidence that Ronny W. and MedPlus could complete this job correctly and make the railing safe. We heard all kinds of excuses and saw little results, and we felt my mother’s home was a training ground. In the meantime, my mother was home without any safety railing on the staircase.
At 6 weeks of waiting, at the third attempt, we terminated the job with MedPlus, we fired them.
They painted the damaged wall, and the owner, Michael S. was informed of all the problems from start to finish. A very sad performance by MedPlus and Ronny W., who finally apologized for the incorrect and improper installation of the grab bars, grip tape and Promenaid railing system.
I would recommend calling Shopper’s Home Health Care for a Promenaid Railing System. They quoted the job and installed the railing in 6 days. We know that we have a well-installed railing system, now.
Hi Stephen,
It was a pleasure working with you and your family from the onset of this project. When we initially met at your mothers home, while she was living in a retirement residence, I appreciated the fact that your families aim was to have your mother return back to the home she loves and maintain her freedom, independence and most of all safety and move out of retirement living.
I recall that our second meeting was arranged at my request to have your mother and a community occupational therapist meet with us at the home in order to properly assess your mother for her accessibility and mobility needs. At this meeting, we were able to determine that the staircase needed to have alterations made, adding a wall mounted continuous handrail on the left side of the staircase in an ascending direction, with 16" top and bottom landing extensions, ADA wall returns, which would be placed underneath the existing chair rail. In addition to the handrail, I advised the installation of stair nosing protection that would provide visual contrast and additional grip. These recommendations were made based on the most current proposed AODA built environment standards and most recent Ontario Building Code revisions as of 2016 for public space.
It was also discovered that the second floor main bathroom was lacking a grab bar at the tub/shower entrance wall, so a matching grab bar to the (2) your mom already had in place. It was noted that these grab bars do not meet building code, although commercial building code does not affect residential properties in Ontario and even if they did, human rights code supersedes building code, which in affect allows for meeting individual needs in residential and public spaces. The occupational therapist noted that the existing grab bars would accommodate your mothers grip, so it was not an issue to install the matching grab bar.
I created a comprehensive design with photographs to illustrate the changes needed and provided you with a quote in a timely manner.
Stephen, I cannot begin to tell you how sorry I am that our plan could not be implemented by my team and can honestly say that if as much care had been taken in the implementation as was taken during my assessments at your mothers home, the outcome would have been a success. My team is as dedicated as myself and we have all learnt a valuable lesson from this experience.
The lesson here for me is that my team will need more training on the Promenaid handrail system as well as the site procedures needed to ensure a successful outcome on all accessibility projects. Follow up with the manufacturer has been made and training will be provided before any handrails as complex as your mothers will be tackled again.
At the end of the day, what is most important is that your mother is back home and living safer at home, so I understand why you decided to cancel the project and I give my respect and compliments to Shoppers installation staff for there expertise in handing the installation. I'd be happy to visit your mother to inspect the work in order to ensure that the outcome meets the specifics noted in my assessment without charge as I am truly interested in seeing results first hand and love seeing accessibility solutions come into place.
All the best,
Sincerely,
Ronny Wiskin, CEAC
