Hello,
Im 21, finishing up my diploma in police foundations. Ive worked 4 years in landscaping, patios, porches, brick laying, armour stones, operating skid steer to to handle armour stones, stone fire places (remodelling, kitchen/ washroom tile remodelling).
Are there licences to require with landscaping and bricklaying?
Other then insurance, I plan to open up my own business dealing with landscaping, fireplace renovations, remodelling interior walls/kitchens (only tiling or stone, no electrical or structure carpentry).
Last question, how do I become a contractor?
-Matthew
In short , anyone can become a contracter, self proclaimed included . A jack of all trades can be concidered as a contractor most definatly . As for licencing , having permits for renos if required needing inspections such as major structure additions major , upgrades indoors as new bathrooms, new breaker boxes ,new electrical instalations would be best to have inspected for insurance purposes incase of problems down the road. If it was work in your own home most of us wouldnt bother with permits/inspections for re routing a light switch/socket , sink/shower stall ,pluming ect but as far as a contractor goes, hiring one to do the work on any major work it would give peace of mind and take any lilability away from yourself being the contractor in the furtue if any major isues came up down the road.
For yourself , it sounds like you are not doing any major structure work , its mostly cosmetic work . Your just fine.
Word of mouth does go along way , most repeat buisness and costomers are word of mouth in this world . We all know or have a friend of a friend who does some kind of service .
Do good work and dont cut corners . if in dought contact local building inspectors office and request spec/codes on certian work you may be looking at doing . You can allways have a certified contractor such as electrition or plummer.
Hope this makes scence .
Jack (of all ) licenced to none.
