Privacy Hedging

We like to sit out on our front deck in the mornings and evenings...we would like to put a privacy hedge of some sort between us and the 1 neighbour. I want it to be about 15 feet long and I thought since it is out in front of the house I would want something colourful, fast growing and tall enough to give us some privacy.

What do you suggest I plant? And how do I plant and when?

I have attached a pic of the corner where I want to put it...starting at the corner of the house - coming out 15 or so feet to hide us from the neighbours.

Thanks

Dianne

I would personally put up lilac bushes. I like the color and they are fast growing.

Hi Diane,

I'm not an expert on plants, but I would recommend that you consult your city by-laws first. Many municipalities have restrictions on the height of front lawn fences or shrubs/bushes acting as a fence, perimeter or privacy wall. In Winnipeg, for example, that's 4 feet for any part between the front eaves and the street.

You may want to consider a double lattice wall along the side of your deck instead.

Hope that helps.
