Bathroom waterproofing

We are replacing the tub in an old house with a shower stall. We are tiling this area and will be installing cement board around the shower. We also are tiling around the sink alcove. Do we need to install cement board there as well or can we apply tile to regular drywall because it's not going to be getting more than an occasional splash. We also need to fix the floor. Right on top of the floor joists is 3/4 inch tongue and groove. This appears to be in good condition. Above that is plywood. That is rotten especially around the toilet. I'm not sure if it is 3/4 or 1/2 inch. We will be removing the plywood. What is the best product to put down on top of the tongue and groove. We are using life proof luxury vinyl tile flooring from Home Depot. It says it can be used in bathrooms. Thank you for your time answering. Have a great day.

Hi Steven

Cement bord is not waterproof it is a porous product you should still have a Schluter membrane on the shower area. You could have used regular drywall if protected by this wall membrane. I have seen water leech thru tile and thru cement bord. As for behind the sink as long as you caulk between bottom tile and countertop should be fine

Hi there.

Tile backer is much more user friendly than cement board. Regular drywall is fine for a backsplash.

1/2" spruce ply over the subfloor is likely sufficient.

Schluter fabric membrane is best for a shower area. If it was a half tub with tile, then roll on water proofing (2-3 coats or to manufacture specs) will work, but again Schluter is best.

Good one side plywood is good for LVT/LVP. 3/8, 1/2"... whatever you need to maintain decent finished floor heights.

Steven, You have a lot of good advice. Also, make sure that you seal the tiles after you grout the areas. For the floor, 1/2" plywood is fine unless you were planning on something heavy like slate or marble. When you put the plywood down, fill the seams so there isn't any noticeable gaps. (plus any dents or imperfections. Other than that, you should be good to go. Have fun.
