Best way to attach new deck post to existing underground footings

I removed my 12x10 deck entirely due to water damage and found the old deck posts were resting on top of buried cement footings without any base bracket or anchor. What is the best plan to set my new posts using the old footings?

Hi James

A few questions, how deep were those pilings from the grade ? How high was the deck from the ground ?

Was the deck attached to the house ? Are you looking to replace the ledger ? Did it have a waterproof membrane ? Are you looking to rebuild exactly what was there ?

These questions are going to define the job in terms of permit requirements if any; if the pilings were sufficient to hold the old deck, you can drill and install an anchor plate into the top of the pile and attach new 4x4's or 4x6's to support the new deck. Thanks

It is a Code requirement for the wooden posts to be connected to the concrete pilings. Brackets are available at Home Depot. You'll just have to drill a hole in the concrete (assuming the piles are substantial enough to do so).

Any kind of piling is supposed to be engineered but exceptions are generally made for deck supports provided it's not carrying a roof over the deck.

Decks less than 2' above grade don't require a permit or a railing.
