Hello, I have a rather large half bath in my basement I'd like to convert to a 3/4 bath for guests. The room is 63" x 93".

I'd also like to move the door from where it is to directly in front of the toilet so that the door opening as it is now can be closed off and the shower installed on that side with a single smaller sink vanity in between. Minor electrical would need to move. The toilet can stay where it is but I'd need plumbing for the shower.

Nothing super fancy, a shower (no bathtub) surround kit and mid-range stuff. I'm hoping to get an idea of price. I don't want to go get official quotes if I already know it's way out of range of what I can afford or want to pay.

Hi Caitlin, given the space you have to work with and the work to be done, I would recommend maybe a slight change in layout to reduce the amount of electrical and plumbing work to be completed.

That being said, please see the attached floor plan I have created for your bathroom. The longer walls will need be strapped with 1x2 pine boards, where the studs are located in the wall, and have new 1/2 drywall put over top of those to make your bathroom about 60.5" wide to fit the shower stall in this plan.

The shower stall I am thinking is a 32x60" utile maax brand shower alcove that comes in a few colours from home depot. See this link: https://goo.gl/kxXqdd The price of the glass door is not included, and they also have many styles, but the cost is roughly $700 before tax. See this link: https://goo.gl/Jvy4R6

The vanity size I chose was 18x30" in size, you can choose from lots of options also at home depot. You can reuse the toilet if you'd like to save some money, or you can buy a new one for $200-300 for a basic dual flush which will save you water.

For the flooring I would recommend a product that home depot carries that is a vinyl flooring that clicks together. Lots of styles, very affordable, easy to install, and is durable to the moisture that forms in bathrooms.

I would also make sure the exhaust fan is the right amount of air flow for that room size. Given the dimensions you should have one that moves a minimum 50 cubic feet per minute (CFM) to ensure you are removing the moisture from the shower to prevent mold/mildew from forming.

Electricians typically charge around $89/hour for a solo contractor here in Ontario. My guess would be you would be looking at 3 hours of work on the high end to install the new exhaust fan, and to move any outlets that need moving. If you can get away without moving the outlets as I presume they are on the end wall inside the door, then you would be 1-2 hours for the install of the exhaust fan I would presume.

the plumber will probably be between $1000-$2000 and should including jack hammering the floor, installing all drains needed, new cement poured, the shower base installed, the water lines all run, the shower walls installed and the sink/shower fixtures hooked up as well. (this is typically what my plumber sub contractor will do for me) Mine will not install the glass shower walls, but on the Maax brand showers they are fairly easy to install if you have a handy friend that could help you.

The drywall work will be contractor dependent. Have someone come through to quote this out as you will be dry walling two new walls in this bathroom. The cheaper the work though typically means the less quality with drywall, so make sure you find someone with 10+ years of experience, ask for references from all your contractors if you can't good reviews online. I would recommend using this service to post your project and this way you are more likely going to get good quality tradesman.

Good luck on your project!
