Deck---Railings

I am repairing a deck -replacing stairs /deck boards . The railings were actually 4 by 4 post with lattice between. Terrible. Looked like a play-pen . When I removed them to rebuild I liked the open look and wondered if closing it in with railings was necessary. From Ground to deck boards I measure 30 inches. I thought I would go with a really wide stair . What does the regulation say -I can't seem to pinpoint what I am looking for.

Thanks

Hi David,

Generally to be at building code if a deck is above 24" from the ground then you do need a railing and if its 30" then you would need a railing of a min 36". As for your wide staircase, if you had an open rise your max width is 36" but if you close your rise then you can go to 48".

Hope this is useful
