Deck Reno - What type of fastener should I use?

I am working on my deck. Joining 2x8 to existing 2x8 for support for furniture. What type of fastener should I use. I have been using 2 1/2 inch screws. Deck mate deck screws and using 1/2 bolts where 3 2x8 meet.
