Gazebo vs roof over patio

Hi,

I have just purchased a small bungalow in London, ON. My plan is to add a patio door to the back of the house, then build a deck for outdoor living space. My estimate is that the deck will be 14' wide by 12'-14' deep. I originally planned on having a roof built over the deck (I am allergic to abundance of sun, so just a pergola type roof would be insufficient for my needs). I began looking at what is involved, and the cost, of having a roof built, and now I'm thinking maybe a hard-top gazebo (ie from Costco) attached to the side of the house might be easier to add, and more cost-effective.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Sylvia,

Gazebos today come in a wide variety of styles and sizes. They are also low maintenance and if of good quality will last many years. Adding a roof to a deck area can add a certain element of style and sophistication to a backyard design, but they are a lot more expensive and need regular maintenance, especially if its wood that needs to be painted, stained or sealed every couple of years. Installing a roof over a deck could also lead to having to get building permits and plans done up which could add to the cost.

If cost is an issue adding a gazebo to a deck can be a great alternative and keep the budget in check.

Add some extra budget to your deck and get some nice features, like better railings, inlay lighting and better wood. Then add a gazebo to the top of it to finish it off. It will keep the costs in check and give you flexibility.

Thanks, Dan, that's what I was hoping to hear! It seems like a lot more work (as you say, permits, etc) to do the roof, but then again, I've never been in a position to really consider it before. I just know I want a look of permenance, that's why I'm thinking of one that attaches to the house. Then again, does that make it actually "permanent" and I need a permit? So many questions, so little knowledge :(

Well a gazebo and a roof over patio are different, depends on the function you wanna give to that place...a gazebo is more like "a house" of the green space, while the patio is an extension of the house., you should take care of the roofing (https://revetementagro.com/en/product/polycarbonate)..
