What does the licence number generally start with? Would like to validate the plumber I wish to use for some work and have been given a few numbers.
well the best way to find out to be honest with you is go direct to the city and ask about the company with the inspectors.
You can check the name and/or trade qualification number at http://www.collegeoftrades.ca/ (for Ontario)
"Find a member" on the home page.
Thank you for contracting a qualified professional!
If you want to check on the validity of your plumbers licence call the city ask to speak with someone in the Utilities dept. and ask them the same question and they can either answer you or put you in contact with someone that knows the answer.
Thank you
The college of trades is a good place to start, but that will only tell you if the individual(s) is licensed; it will not tell you if the company is licensed. I believe that plumbers are licensed by the municipality / region in addition to the individuals. Similar to the Licensed Electrical Contractor (LEC), I need to be both licensed individually and as a company, by different organizations with different numbers.

To check licences are easy. Simply ask to see them. Check the name and expiry dates on them. Ask to see their liability insurance and again check the name and expiry on it. We show our licences, insurance and any certification including TSSA to each of our clients. In the GTA, a plumber's licence number will begin with a P then the number. A plumbing and heating company will begin with a PH. If in doubt, call your city licensing and check with the BBB as well.
