We are installing 150sq/ft of 12" x24" porcelain tile in our laundry room and front entrance and would like to use a premixed mortar, to ensure consistent consistency. Is there a product you could recommend for this application?
Any of the common thin-set manufacturers make excellent mortars for this purpose which are easy to use.
If it is over plywood then use a polymer enhanced thinset for added flexibility.
If it is being installed over ditra-mat (or comparable pvc underlayment), then use an unmodified thinset.
Custom, Mapei or Laticrete are the most common.
Don't use the acrylic mastic as it is not suitable for this type of application.
I recommend to mix your own mortar. I find that the shrinkage for the premixed mortars can effect your tiles after you set them.
I recommend the clip and wedge system that is available at the box stores..a great system then it wont matter what mortar you use pre-mixed or self mix.
I also do not use premixed on floors... when using with larger tiles it's best to mix your own.
