River stones to kill the grass?

There is grass between two sidewalks, mine and my neighbour. We just don't like trimming the grass in that area. If we fill the area with river stones, will it kill the grass? Or any other way to get rid of that grass?

Hey all, what a good question! Most people feel that if they put river rocks or even different size of rocks down that it will kill or stop the grass from growing.

To be honest grass will grow almost anywhere we don't want it to grow murphy's law lol...

There will be small air pockets where it still will grow even if you cover it up with rocks. In two years roughly you would have spent a lot of money putting rocks down only to either spray the entire rocks with a weed or grass killer but then grass is so resilient and there fore you will have keep spraying chemicals and that can add up $$ in time.

There is only one good way to cure this problem and that is by buying a pro silver lining fabrics at your local depot that sells top soil, mulch and stones for your home but it's all in bulk. Yes those places every city has a place. I live in Ottawa and I get my supplies at a place called Greely sand and gravel.

This product comes in a roll 3ft wide by 50ft long. You can place the fabric on top of your lawn in strips overlapping each other by 3 inches min. Then when you cover up your entire area with rocks on top. By doing this will block out all the sun light and therefore stop the growth of the grass and weeds etc.... Also after applying this pro silver lining (guaranteed for 20 yrs) when you mow your lawn and if excess grass clippings go onto the rocks it will not grow because there is no soil for the grass to grow in. The fabric keeps the grass and weeds from growing plus the weight of the rocks will block what's ever left you will never have to do any more maintenance on your rocks, nothing will grow there ever again.

Good evening,

No the river stone will not kill the grass it will still have openings to allow growth, that is my professional opinion. I would think about installing some sort of underpayment prior to install of river rock if that's what you wish to have
