My basement bathroom is roughed in (by the builder) prior to my occupation. The toilet and sink drain are below the cement floor and ready to put in the fixture. However for the shower the horizontal drain attached to the stub is above the floor surface.
Does anyone know why they would do this? Is there any solution besides digging up the cement? I would not want to dig it up for nothing. If there is some impediment maybe I could put in a tub and therefore move the drain location.

Hello Barbara,
The Toilet and shower or tub Drain would be below the floor. Usually there is an access in the cement to get at the drain to hook up either a tub or shower. The Toilet should have a 4 pipe, sometimes 3 pipe that comes up above the floor and is capped. The horizontal arm you are talking about I believe would go to your basin or sink.
Without a picture I cannot say for sure but the above cement pipe should be your basin arm.

Normally plumbing contractor leave a drain pipe or p-trap under concrete when they rough in ground work. Some plumber maybe use a metal box cover the pipe or p-trap, others just rise a vertical pipe up the concrete. The box case will be easier to install shower drain if the location is correct. But another case you have to dig cement to hook up shower drain. You could send some pictures, I can tell you how to do it. Best wishes!
Hi Barbara in Ontario it's just done that way but if it's not in the right place you just have to dig it up and move it. We have to do so on almost every job. All 3 pc can be moved.
Hi Barbara. There should be an access panel on the surface of the concrete floor and if not you need to break the concrete up this is done all the time and not a big concern.
I suggest if you have any further questions you contact a trusted Pro plumbing contractor in your local area good luck
Thanks guys:
It seemed odd to have the pipe on the surface but if this is common then maybe I'm overthinking it. Seemed to be a little pointless not to bury it.
Thanks for the benefit of your experience.
Barbara
It's very good that you decided to deal with these pipes, because once I didn't look there all year and then there was a flood in my house, but then they helped me with water damage restoration in Arlington,VA. I am very grateful to these guys
