I am looking to extend or widen the current dormer (about 2-2.5 feet on each side) on the second floor of our house. What kind of costs and/or potential issues could this have?

It is very difficult for any contractor to quote on such a project without having more information about the existing conditions, stuctural drawings, etc.

It may be a simple or very complex project involving structural engineers, extensive "colateral" damage in demolition to access and improve on structural members, etc.

The best route is consulting a structural engineer or architect before trying to get quotes.
