Phoenix Renos did a full kitchen and open plan main floor reno for us, followed by a basement reno. The quality of the work has been exceptional and we've come to trust James, not only as someone who goes above and beyond to do the job perfectly, but also someone who takes the time to understand what you want to achieve. His guidance and experience with planning has proven invaluable time and again.
You're not hiring a big team, so the work might take slightly longer but the results are well worth it.
James was great! Of course what we thought that we wanted ended up (after talking with James) being significantly different. We needed him to remove glass mirror sliding doors and replace them with panel doors that matched the rest of the decor in our house. He did one of the set of doors upstairs complete with supplying the doors and painting them (his paint job was awesome!!). When we looked at the other set of doors...we were faced with a choice: replace them with panel doors or retire the closet entirely. We decided that we should retire the closet and just make it open space in the room. James was able to shift his scope of work and wreck and re-drywall the necessary changes with no bother what-so-ever.
James arrives with a complete set of tools (he was even able to patch together the carpet in one area - complete with heat tape and heat iron) and knows his stuff on most activities. I would hire James again in a heartbeat! He is honest about what his abilities are and will tell you if he does not have expertise in a particular area.
I had a very positive experience with James from Phoenix. He always took the time to communicate and did a very excellent job with the rough in. I asked about putting a laundry tub in and was told if I bought it he would put it in. No extra charge. As some what of a diy'r myself, he was always free to give me suggestions on for future projects. Months later my sump pump seemed to have issues (ended up my pipe was frozen) but James came by on a Saturday morning looked at it with me... figured out the issue gave me suggestions again about finishing my basement and did not charge me. His work is meticulous and neat even with jobs that will be eventually hidden. I highly recommend Phoenix.
We had a great experience working with James/Phoenix Renos to create our new master bedroom. The work involved combining two smaller bedrooms into a master bedroom and completely re-configuring the space (non-load bearing wall removal, closet removal/rebuild, exterior wall demolition, brickwork, new patio door installation, new flooring, new closet, drywall/ceiling repair etc). The project also involved re-tiling a section of the bathroom floor and installing new bathroom shelving.
James was friendly, courteous and professional right from the initial assessment through to completion. He is very attentive to detail and takes pride in the quality of his workmanship. He spent a lot of time answering all our questions (and we had lots!) and explaining every step of the project to us. James completed the entire project on his own and is highly skilled in multiple trades and every aspect of home renovations.
Regarding budgets and payments, James made us feel extremely comfortable right from the start - as advertised, he didn't mark up materials and didn't ask us to pay an advance deposit (most other contractors who quoted the project asked for 20% or more deposit). He was mindful of our budget and made suggestions that helped us save money on the project. A good example of this is the patio door install - every other contractor suggested a custom sized patio door, however, James came up with a creative solution to fit a standard size patio door which saved us over $1000 (the door looks great too).
All work was completed in accordance with the Ontario Building Code and passed the required building permit inspections. James always left the house in a tidy/livable manner (we lived at home during the reno). He also worked on the project while we were on vacation for 10 days and we had no issues with this - James was completely trustworthy and promptly responded to texts/email. The project was slightly over the initial quoted timeline, however, this is to be expected when doing a large reno in an older home and James was always upfront about his timelines and work schedule.
We will definitely use James/Phoenix Renos for future projects and highly recommend Phoenix Renos if you are looking for top-quality work and excellent customer service at a competitive price.
Thanks James!

We had a "simple" job of moving a dryer outlet from one wall to another. James was helpful and got the job done quickly and professionally and at a reasonable price.
We will use James again for future projects for sure!
Awesome job!!
James installed hardwood floors prior to us moving into our new house. The timeline was tight, and he worked around the clock to get it completed on time. He went above and beyond what most others would have done.
We'll definitely use James again for future projects.
James is one of the best in the biz! He is professional, knowledgeble, trustworthy, gets the job done on time and on budget! It is next to impossible to find someone that excels at all the trades they provide but James again sets the bar high. From painting, plumbing, electrical, hardwood, stripping and staining of the staircase etc everything was completed professionally and looks amazing. I highly recommend Phoenix Handyman and Renovations and I will definately use this company again. Thank you James and handycanadian.com for making my life easy!!
