I built a barn and let the pine siding dry for a year. Now it's time to stain but I don't know what to use. I've always used oil stain on my cedar sided house but can't find anything good now that everything has to be VOC compliant. I've heard that BEHR is terrible. Any other suggestions?
Thompsons water based stains. Low voc, good binding, repells water very good. Should get 2-3 years min.
Hi Tina,
This is certainly a loaded question. I have done many cedar decks and Cedar porches, and the product I have had the most success with now is " Cabot Australian Timber Oil stain "
Cedar unfortunately does not like anything on it because of the basic natural properties of the wood. Very often the best solution for cedar is to just pressure wash it every 2 years. it will come up like new. NOT to much pressure however, you could damage the wood as well.
Todays latex stains are very very good. I actually prefer them over oil stains. Check with your home improvement store for you application.
I do agree with some of the other posts, I think all stains need to be applied every few years, I have found Behr is a stain that will have to be applied every year so not my recommendation, I have also used Cabot and depending on winters and weather you will usually get 3-4 years on this product.
I put sico solid stain on my pine siding in 1998 (two coats) again in 2009 still looks great, the pine knots will bleed through but they will with every stain. I only recoated because it was a dark colour and it faded, it never peeled or flaked.
