I recently got 11'X11' concrete pad built in my backyard. Some contractor in my neighborhood was working and I got him to build this pad for me. He built it while I was away at work. Later when I checked my security cameras, I saw that he built it on top of grass without digging the grass out. He poured gravels on top of grass then compacted them and then poured about 5" concrete on top of it. I have never heard of anyone doing it this way. Should I be concerned?
The building code does not require such a small building (garden shed) to have a concrete pad placed on soil free of organic materials. If you were required to remove all black dirt and organic materials you could be digging up to 6'. It would be up to you to specify the level of ground prep you desire.
All organics are to be removed before forming and pouring concrete. This means all Grass and topsoil beneath the grass. Chances are good that your slab will settle unevenly or cracks.
It was done wrong. You have to start on dirt or clay, then gravel, sand & re-bar & only then is concrete poured. What you have will likely crack first winter freeze/thaw cycles. Sheds up to 100 sq/ft can be built on wood runners as well, you do not need a concrete pad though it is better. Over 100 sq/ft you must get a permit BTW and should check your local development office for requirements
