Deck railing posts

I recently put up new deck railing posts 4 x 4 and secured them inside rim joist with 1/2 hex head through bolts and simpson tension ties. Two posts have come loose within weeks of install. Is this due to PT drying out or is this a greater concern? I don't want to simply tighten them up and then have them come loose again once I put the fascia up.

You should check your rim joists to make sure they are tight and re tighten the bolts and if they don't tighten up you may need to drill completely through and use threaded bolts with washers. Make sure the 4x4s are sound (not punky or cracked as well as thew rim joist)

Hi,

Box the post in with blocking (sized the same as the deck joists).

Your post is likely against the rim and a joist at the moment...box the post in, on one side from joist to joist, and then from the joist-to-joist blocking to the rim joist. This will lock the post in place.

Agreed with Dave. However, when I attach railing posts I always carriage bolt them in with 2 carriage bolts through the rim joist and the 4x4. This way, it never comes loose and you don't have to worry about the railing failing due to the 4x4's letting go.
