My contractor is scheduled to start renovation in a few days.
He previously confirmed they have good insurance coverage limits, and can provide documents.
Now when asked to provide this, he has given me his Business #, insurance policy #, and WCB MB #. I have been able to confirm he is active on both counts.
But he says they can't release the actual document. I explained I need to see his coverage amounts (to cover my own butt, of course).
He is on this site, and has excellent reviews, and I have met with him several times, and everything else is good. I feel he will do excellent work, but I can't seem to get through to him why I am asking for these documents.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. (quickly).
Hello there,
I am a contractor myself and my insurance company sent me an insurance certificate to share with clients. If your contractor is willing to give the name of his insurance broker, you can call yourself to confirm. If he is not willing, then I would say that he doesn't have coverage. No matter how many great reviews he's had, no insurance = no coverage. Be careful. In fact, I'd call WCB and make sure he is in goos standing as well. Hope this helps, Trish from Fixette in Victoria, BC.
Not sure why contractor can't provide you with the valid copy of his WSIB (which can be obtained for free online) and a copy of his insurance coverage. This is standard procedure when hiring contractor or subcontractor.
Thank you for the replies. Insurance provided, all good now.
