Painting oak colored baseboard, trim, doors and cupboards

I have a few questions. Our house was built in the 80s.. our entire main floor is honey oak hardwood and all of our baseboards and trim are a light brown (oak like) color. Some of windows have white trim (we think as the windows were replaced by the previous owner) and the rest are that brown oaky color. As well our kitchen cabinets and closet doors are oak. We just dont want to paint things then it end up looking cheap and regret it

1. Is it sinful to paint oak closet doors, baseboards and casing white?

My husband wants to paint the baseboards and trim white and the doors dark. Are dark doors a bad idea?

2. What would be a good color option for our kitchen cabinets? I've thought about painting the cupboards an off white color and the island something darker like an espresso color? We also plan for stainless appliances

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Hi Katelynn,

I would paint all the baseboards, door trim, and window trim white. I do think dark doors are a bad idea, so those would go white as well.

For the kitchen cabinets I would do the same white, the darker backsplash you have and walls will go good together. I would keep the island same colour as the other cabinets.

After doing that, my next step would be some updated modern flooring! Like a dark grey, but that would only be next year haha!

Hi Katelynn,

Generally speaking painting over real hardwood is frowned upon because it is rare and very expensive. However, often it looks dated. You can of course paint your baseboards and cupboards if you choose to and the colour theme you're looking at doing, if done well, will update the look. I would suggest you look into using a coloured stain on the kitchen cupboards to update the look, but not lose the oak wood grain look. You can get stains in many different colours. The only issue with painting vs staining is that the cupboards would need to be sanded before staining. Painting doesn't require it, but it is suggested.

Hope that helps, good luck!

Hi Katelynn,

I think your home is beautiful in Oak! But I understand wanting to update the look. I would go into your local paint store (I recommend Sherwin Williams). Bring your photos and explain your intentions.

A really good quality paint with some tips on technique can go a long way!

I bought a pine barn door from Home Depot a few months back and was worried it would look "cheap" but I used a high quality Acrylic paint from SW and everyone comments on how rich my door looks! So investing in good paint can certainly help your situation!

Dark doors are sooooo IN right now! Go for it! We did Grey trim in our home and people thought we were CRAZY! But guess what it turned out all of our friends and family love it.

If I had to make a suggestion for cabinets, I would suggest a classic white for the cabinets and if you want to do something funky for the Island try a nice dark navy. My favorite Navy's are Indigo Baltik and Hale Navy from SW. (I don't work for them!) lol

I caution you with dark floors because you can SEE everything; pet hair, human hair, dust, crumbs you name it! I chose a grey/oak flooring when we re-did all the floors in my house, I chose a matte finish (no shine!) that way they always looks clean!

Good luck with your projects.

Hi Katelyn , I understand your situation totally and have painted many oak houses out in white or other colors. Just remember when you paint oak cabinets you can never get rid of the green no matter how many coats of paint you apply. I don't mind the look personally and it definitely cleans it up with a more modern look. Just go to a good paint store explain to them what you're doing and get a good primer sealer for all Oak prior to painting with semi-gloss. You can do it. Jeff

Hi Katelynn,

Absolutely you can paint the baseboard, trims and the doors but about the kitchen i also prefer to leave the oak you can just sanding and make a stain in any different colours you like.

And also even you wanna change the cabinet to white you have to sanded very well and primer and after paint it after it will also be looks so beautiful.

Hope that's help.
