Questioning Contractor's Work - Mistakes

So after evaluating my skill level I determined I was not up to the task of replacing the siding on my house so I hired a contractor, but this did not stop me from looking into the process of siding and failures to avoid.

So after some of the work was completed I took a look at the product and am seeing multiple concerning issues I believe are incorrect but wanted feedback before confronting the contractor about the issues

1) Siding was nailed in using Blind Nailing however most of the nails are still viable.

2) Siding overlap is only about 1/2 and inch where most places I see indicate 1.25" - 1.5".

3) Nails are nailed in 0.5" to 0.75" in from top where everywhere I look indicates minimum 1" from top.

4) Section under window looks like it is missing a piece as the siding drops down about 1" lower then the window trim.

5) Corner trim is terminating about 1" before the siding instead of being even.

Album added with images titled: Siding Work

Product: JamesHardie ASTM C1186 Grade II Type A Compliant.

Thanks

Justin

Instead of guessing that he might be doing it wrong .

Findout what the product he is using .

And read the manufacture specs of the installation .

If he isn't following it , then tell him to correct it .

And get someone that knows what they are doing .

Hi Justin,

If you believe the product was not installed in accordance with manufacturer's specs, I would suggest discussing it with your contractor and ask them to, perhaps, invite the local James Hardie rep so that you can discuss the best course of action to correct the deficiencies.

Justin, It sounds as though several issues exist, but ... as mentioned, see what the siding manufacturer specifies. Generally, siding overlaps abut 1" and the corners should go into the corner posts ... allowing for about 1/2" gap for expansion. Under the window, there should be a window trim of some sort. Either "j" trim or something specified by the manufacturer. My first contact would be the manufacturing company and/or the siding supplier, to get the written installation instructions.
