Removing ceramic tiles on basement floor

Hi, Pros,

How hard it is to remove the ceramic tiles from the basement floor? Can it be done by hand chisel or I have to rent an electric hammer chisel? Is there a mesh underneath? The basement was built 25-30 years ago.

Thanks

More than likely there isn't any mesh as it would be a pain to fasten to concrete, you will want to go and rent a hammer chisel, doing it by hand will take you days

The motar behind the tiles will be glued down to the concrete floor in most cases ,

Think you need to do a test area ,

If you take a hammer break one of the tiles , and break away the motar , make you way to the top of the concrete floor ,

Then have a floor scraper , and scrape away the motar and the tile off the floor.

Once you break the bond from the tile mortar to the concrete floor it should come up fairly easy ,

A mini jack hammer with a wide chisel will work

Hello,

Try removing the tile with a chisel and see how difficult it is to remove the tile. If difficult go and rent a chipping hammer with a bit for tile removal. I used one and it took longer to clean up than it did to break up the tile. You should only be removing the thinset under the tile and it won't have any mesh.

Good day! Removing ceramic tiles from concrete can be a challenge. I understand you want to save money by working yourself into demolition. Probably it is nothing between concrete slab and ceramic tiles except setting material. First you have to take into contact what you will do after? I recommend a professional for many reasons. First, because you never done it before and you have no tools, the time will be way longer in order to clean up the floors. Second it is a safety issue. You can hurt yourself cause the product may turn into chips while removing. Third, you may never achieve the way that floor needs to be prepared for new flooring cause , you may get lucky to remove ceramic in full pieces or big chunks but that means the setting material may stick with the concrete slab and that it is hard to be removed and probably count like 3/4 of the job. Forth, by the time you renting a jack hammer, hollow away all the ceramic removed ( to the dump, not on personal garbage bins), work hard, may finish or not( that means the next floor guy or somebody else will charge for the rest), you waste the few free days from work and get tired back in... This is just my opinion and probably will be embraced by others who ve done it many times, don t want to discourage you in any way, I didn t see your project but I m sure it is other things what a professional will discover to be aware of while seeing the job.... Good luck!

If the tile is over 20 years old there's little chance of any mesh being underneath it. Do yourself a favor and rent a jackhammer it will go away quicker and save you time and money. Good luck. Jeff
