My house has plaster walls, including a few where the plaster is very textured. There are several coats of paint on it, but unfortunately there are also some spots where it's clearly been patched, and not well. We've found asbestos elsewhere in the house, and the person who did that testing told us that there's almost certainly asbestos in the textured plaster, so I don't want to remove it.
Can I skim coat it myself? I'm not particularly experienced with DIY improvements -- I've done a bit of painting, some staining, and my spouse and I replaced a toilet, but that's about it. Is skim coating as easy as it sounds? The house is old and nothing is level or square, so it doesn't need to be perfectly flat.
Also, if I do it myself, do I need to strip the paint first? What product should I be using?
Concerning your ceilings that have asbestos in them. I would leave them alone and install drywall over all your ceilings then new tape and drywall compound. Then you can have knocked down applied. This is easier since they've been painted and you've got issues with patching not to mention you won't have to touch the asbestos in the plaster. This is what we would do in your situation without a doubt! Jeff with all in renovations
Instead of skim coating, you should consider applying either 3/8" or 1/2" drywall over the existing walls and you'll have a fresh start.its quicker and better end result. Hope this helped.
