We live in a semi-detached, and are looking to rebuild the front porch/stairs and enclose half the porch (for a mini mudroom). What kind of professional do we start this conversation with? A design build firm? A general contractor?
General contractor is a good place to start. Someone who specializes in deck building is better.
I recommend you find a good Carpenter that is familiar with building decks and or framing experience. You should look on trusted Pros website for Carpenters contractors. A good Carpenter can build that for you reasonably. I also recommend talking to your neighbor and having it done throughout the front of the house if possible. If you are getting a city permit you will need blueprints to submit and a good contractor will provide these for you. Good luck Jeff
Hi Loretta
Yes , first thing you must do is contact a
BCIN designer. Your local municipal building
office ( city hall) will have a list of names and numbers you can contact. Get some drawings made up as to exactly what you would like.( These could cost you anywhere from
$ 800 to $ 1,500) Than come back to "TrustedPros" to get a few Estimates based on your drawings. You do require these drawings for a building permit. Do your homework on the contactor you choose.
The first thing to do is acquire a building engineers report. The engineer will provide recommendations required to build and obtain a permit for the construction.
From there, you may require foundation experts first, or piles etc. Then you're on to finding a contractor for the construction.
The contractors would be able to pull any necessary permits based on the engineers report.
Best of luck....
