Hello,
I have in the Basement Steel I-Beam spanning 27'7" ft. It has a post supporter in the middle of the beam. I was wondering what is the load this beam can handle?
Does any one know the question or the formula for this?
Is there a pound per square inch - how does it work?
The house is 3 years old, in Hamilton, Ontario.
You have not provided enough information regarding the I-beam. There are five dimensions and a steal quality when this calculation is done by an engineer. There are tables in the Ontario Building Code that can give the the bearing capacity, maximum span and what the minimum support the beam must rest on.
Hello Ek,
You could call any Ontario Structural Engineer, he will give you a quick answer. My question is, why do you need to know? Are you planning on adding load to the house? Something like a hot tub maybe? If so, give the Engineer all the information he needs. Structure is not something to be trifled with. Leave it to the experts.
