Any licenses to look for in an Ottawa contractor?

Hi George,

Things you should look for are wsib clearance, insurance, and if the carpenter is certified. There are a lot of guys who are not certified in any way that own general contractor companies. In ontario if you have a truck you can own a renovation business.

As for the carpenter, what kind of license should he have? I mean, who is authorized to issue him a certificate, Ottawa City?

Hello George,

As a carpenter he would not need a certificate or trade license. In Ontario, carpentry is a voluntary trade not a restricted trade, although trade licensing is available through the Ontario college of trades.

He would however need a city of Ottawa business license. Along with WSIB and general liability.
