How much should I expect to pay on a basement bathroom renovation? New shower stall, drop ceiling, vanity, toilet and floor. Once all the materials are purchased what do you think the contractor should charge me? What would be a fair price?

For major renovations, as a starting point I always express to clients, take the cost of materials and apply that to labour and you usually have a general starting price. This is usually for a straight forward install, of course each contractor is different.

Many of the bathroom renos regardless of area in the house will typically be 2-5k for labour.

When there is upper end choices or layout changes with plumbing and electrical involved it will typically range 5-10k.

If the basement bathroom is being built from scratch. Then to do the required drain roughage, framing, drywalling, tiling, electrical and installing shower sink and toilet complete with material and labor will be $8,000.00 and upwards depending on your choice of standard.

Hope this helps.

If plumbing rough ins are needed for water supply, drains and sanitary hook-in to the main stack, and assuming that your main sanitary is 4-6 feet from where the toilet would go, your plumbing costs will be in the range of 3-4K. For framing of the new bathroom, drywall (installed, mud and tape), insulation, electrical, venting of the bathroom, tiling, trim, paint, installation of pre-hung door, and installation/hookup of all fixtures, another 5-6K. Total budget in the range of 8-10K minimum.

This would be for a bathroom ranging in size from approximately 40-60 square feet.

Cheers,

Bill

The prior posts from the other contractors are a general estimate however if you want a tiled shower done properly with a proper waterproof membrane, glass door, tiled floor the cost can significantly increase. Waterproofing a shower properly can easily cost hundreds of dollars more. Depending on the exhaust vent it could also be a significant cost and work to get the bathroom vented properly outside. The client needs to understand that there are variables that could significantly add to the cost if the work is going to be completed properly.
