We are finishing our basement and my dad said we needed to brace in between the two by four on walls to prevent the wood from twisting. When I try researching this I don't see anywhere that it mentions this as being necessary.

Any sugestions?

Your dad is right, it prevents twisting and provides extra support.

Grab the 2x4 in the middle and see how much you can move it side to side. Install them 48" from the ceiling so you have more support and attachment locations for your drywall.
