Vinyl Siding Question

Good day all. I was wondering if it is normal to be able to feel nails on the nailing hem on new siding when you run your hand along the siding very lightly (not pushing on the siding) I have also found small white marks on the siding where some of the nails are. Thank you for your time and have a nice day

Yes you can feel the nail heads if you put your hand on the siding since vinyl siding is nailed with roofing nails and are always left approximately 3/8 of an inch loose. Concerning the white spots without seeing it I cannot reply to that question but it could be that the vinyl siding is the thinnest vinyl siding on the market in that case it is possible that the nail heads are rubbing on it and leaving marks unfortunately.

Thanks very much for the information. The job was just completed last Friday and it is Mitten Sentry 44 mill siding the premium.

Hi Brad,

Nails are never hammered all the way in on vinyl siding, n'or should they protrude 3/8". Approx 1/16" is all that is required between the nail head and nailing strip. This is to allow movement / expansion / contraction etc. The nail head should not be touching the overlapping panel and you should definitely not be able to feel it.

Nail heads that protrude beyond 1/16 may very well cause those spots.

Sounds like nothing short of an improper installation....site unseen & based on your description.

Good luck!

Vinyl siding can not be nailed tight because of expansion and contraction. Sometime nails can be 1/2 in out to keep it straight. If you feel them I think it should be ok. Not sure what the white marks can be though unfortunately without seeing them.

The nails should never be tight to allow for free movement. However if they are too loose it allow for excessive sloppy siding. Since many walls are not perfectly straight, a good sider will "float" the wall by leaving some areas looser to allow the siding to sit straight for a better look.
