How to remodel existing fireplace?

How much would something like this cost? Floor to ceiling brick fireplace - approx. 6 ft. wide with "step" approx. 16 in. X 6 in. running full width. I would like to modernize the fireplace, probably tile the brickwork or reface it with some kind of material.
Would welcome suggestions and cost estimates on doing this. Budget is limited.

Our team can get this refaced with the most popular artificial stone for 2500 plus tax.
That would include supply and instal materials on approx 6x8 fireplace, hearth. With black slate on top remove the bricks or apply over it.
