Andrew at AJLCustomHomes did a terrible job in our home.
Unfortunately we hired Andrew to do our home reno after a few in person meetings and a walk through of the work. The job started on Oct 31 2019, the first day Andrew came by to start the work. He advised that he will be covering the floor with plastic as it will get extremely dirty/dusty from removing the stucco/popcorn ceiling and take down the interior wall. By the end of day 1 the work was done however, the floors were not properly covered at all –it was a HUGE mess. By day 2, we realized that certain requests we discussed with Andrew in person were conveniently forgotten about. Andrew argued that he did not recall what was discussed in person and therefore would not do the work without an additional cost.
We initially requested the pot lights in the living room to be split to 2 switches instead of 1 and for a switch in the hallway to be moved from one location to another. Obviously, Andrew claimed that he was not able to recall this conversation so we unfortunately were unable to get these done unless we paid an additional cost.
We noticed that the ceiling in the hall way was not painted. When we asked Andrew why, he said that it was not part of the job! We initially requested the stucco to be removed from the living room and hallway and for it to be painted. The living room ceiling was painted and finished however it made no sense that he left the hallway ceiling untouched.
Andrew left the job unfinished (ceiling unpainted and missing the transition piece for the floor where the wall was removed) also the walls needed some touch up paint AND we were left with a HUGE mess to clean up. Our hardwood floors were covered with piles of dust from the stucco, plaster and paint. The paint job on the walls were terrible and very unprofessional. There was paint on the floor, base boards, outlets, switches, furniture and windows.
After several painful repeated discussions with Andrew we got nowhere. And now after Andrew collected almost 95% of his money, we never heard back from him.
It is now the end of the year and we are looking for someone else to finish the job Andrew was not able to complete. The biggest lesson for us and all homeowners out there is to always take things down in writing, be as detailed as possible and request a formal quote.
On a positive note, the pot lights and the open space (after the wall was removed) looks good with the exception of the ceiling being uneven and the drywall/plaster and paint job was beyond terrible! However, this does not make up for amount we paid and all the unfinished work we are left with. We are disappointed with the work and would definitely NOT recommend Andrew from AJLCustomHomes.
During the initial meeting at your house we had discussed the removal of popcorn ceiling in your hallway as well as your living/ dinning room. Further to this we discussed the removal of the partition wall between the living room and dining room. The adding of pot lights and having the put on dimmer switches. We also discussed providing you with a final paint job for the living room and dining room. You had mentioned that you would like to paint the hallway yourself to save cost.
On day one of the job I had removed the partition wall and the popcorn ceiling. As you said I discussed that the process was extremely dusty. With regards to the flooring the floor was covered with dropsheets as well as additional al plastic to prevent the floor from getting dirty. As well as all openings were tarped off to avoid dust from going into other rooms . I do agree that some dust got behind the tarps but by no means did I not take the necessary steps to cover the floor. Please not that I also spent one full day washing the floors as well as cleaning up and had expressed to you that the floor would need to be washed a couple times before the dust is gone, as it takes some time for dust to settle On a construction site.
On day 2 of construction I had the electricians come to complete the pot lights for you. When they had arrived we had gone through the scope of work with you and everything seemed to be okays. When we started the installation you had stated how you had mentioned to me that you wanted separate switches for every 3 lights in your living/family room. I had mentioned that this wasn t discussed during the initial meeting and you were very adamant they you had. As mistakes do happen I gave you and your husband the benefit of the doubt and took the blame. I expressed that the quotation provided didn t include those additional switches as that would have been a substantial amount of work. How ever I agreed that if you wanted to do the additional electrical that I would charge for the electricians work however not charge additional for the Additional ceiling and wall patching. After speaking with your husband we had decided that it was a misunderstanding and that you guys did not want to move forward with the additional work.
However, during the time the electrician was at your home he had asked you what we were to do with regards to the switches And you stated you would like to move forward with them. After installing the first switch my electrician called me for other issues and informed me that he installed one for he additional switches as per your request. Although you told me not to when I was there . When I called you to ask about this you stated you didn t say that and told my electrician that he misunderstood you and that we agreed not to do the switches. because I felt bad For the misunderstanding i incurred the cost of that out of respect for you and your husband which I felt was a pretty fair compromise.
We then came to the issue of the electrical switch being moved to a new location Which we had done for you with no issue. Although it was moved you were upset that we had to cover the original switch with a cover plate. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do to avoid that.
On the 3rd day I painted and primed your family / living room to your satisfaction. Your husband actually commented saying it was quality work. It is only When payment was requested is when all other issues started to arise out of this job.
With regards to the transition piece I had provided you guys with samples of flooring to put in place of the transition that you did not approve of do to colour. We left off with you explaining that you will go look for a colour you like and call me once you find it and I would come and install it. It s been over a month and I have yet to receive that call.......
Thank you for your DISHONEST review.
It was a pleasure working with AJL. Andrew was very approachable and answered all of our questions before and during and after the work. The job started on time and took a little longer and went slightly over budget but that was mainly because of our own design changes which Andrew accommodated without issue. I would definitely recommend them and will use them for my future renovations.
Working with AJL Custom Home and Renovation on my house was such a pleasure. Andrew was stayed true to his quoted prices and timelines. His team worked very hard to ensure that the project was finished in a timely manner. I would definitely use their services again!
Andrew was a pleasure to work with. He is a dedicated worker who puts his clients first and he exceeded all of my expectations when renovating my basement. He definitely puts you at ease knowing that you could trust him with just about anything. I definitely will be using AJL for future projects.
