Bathroom Reno, Story and Review:
I had damaged the tiles that surround my bathtub after a slip and fall against the wall.
I was looking for a reliable, professional contractor to re-tile my master bathroom tub surround and replace the plumbing fixtures. I found Steve Edan on TrustedPros and reached out to him through email. Steve responded quickly to my inquiry, and gave me a reasonable estimate for the re-tiling based from the pictures I sent.
I purchased the replacement tiles & faucet at the end of September. I knew that Steve was busy and wouldn’t be able to do the installation right away. A couple of weeks passed, and having found a solution I was getting anxious to have the shower fixed and brought back into use.
Steve said he could recommend another contractor who could do the work. The teardown work was completed by Steve in November. JD showed up shortly after to do the tile & plumbing work. He seemed personable, customer focused, and indicated he could do the work -- no problem. The work progressed slower than I’d expected and there were several workmanship issues developing such as a large gap at the bottom of the tile and tub where the faucet was located. To add to that, several tiles were uneven to one another, there was a chipped tile and gap by the showerhead, the overall result was poor. The job did not look professional and when I asked my son his opinion, his reaction was immediate, “looks worse than a DIY!”
I voiced my concerns and asked Steve to come over to have a look at the work. I showed him what was wrong. He agreed and said he would get back to me and let me know what could be done. Later that day he contacted me to say that he will re-do the tile and plumbing work. I was relieved to hear that, because I could not live with the job as it stood and had come to the same, regrettable conclusion that the work had to be redone.
Steve was quick to help me pick out some new tiles and suggested upgrading the shower fixtures. He’s very knowledgeable with great experience as well as insight. We did go back and forth on the tile selection, with active and productive debate. Having different tastes with some of the aesthetics was a good thing, the final selection could not have worked out better.
Steve started the re-do and right away I saw a whole different quality of work, vastly improved, and this was a huge relief for me. It took him a couple of hours to install the faucet and get everything ready for tiling. The tile work went smoothly. Everything was straight and even.
Another area of concern that is relevant to the job and this review is that when Steve first came to look at JD’s work, he pointed out the vanity sink looked like it has been scratched, most likely from someone cleaning a trowel in it. This was one of those secondary issues that adds insult to injury. Steve immediately resolved this issue as well, saying he would replace it at no charge for the labour or for the new sink. This was very positive and I was very thankful!
I can’t adequately express my happiness in how much Steve stepped up and made things right! It would have been endlessly aggravating, and untenable, to have left the job as it was first “completed”!
I do recommend Steve to anyone that wants a professional, conscientious and skilled contractor. Steve truly cares about the quality of work, his commitments and customer satisfaction. In any contract, it’s a two-way street, both parties have to be in it for win-win, and achieving a happy conclusion. Steve is this and more. I see it in the result of this project every morning, and it is good.
Up next, I’ve already started discussing some other projects with Steve.

Stephen, thanks for your wonderful review. I am happy that I could make your renovation a reality and one that you are proud to show off! I am sorry for the bad work that James Devitt Construction had left you with and then just walked away from. That is not how I conduct my business or how I treat my customers. There are good contractors and there are bad ones, it is disheartening when even an experienced contractor can be deceived by an unscrupulous and inexperienced contractor and a friendship taken advantage of. Even though, I was in contact with James through out the the tile work and he said that work was going well and would look great in the end, that is not what I saw when I came to look at the completed work. Everything that you could do wrong in tile work was done! And the plumbing work was very shoddy. I have no doubts that it would have leaked in a very short time! I think anyone on TrustPros, or any contractor, should be doing their very best to make a customer a happy. Homeowners are spending thousands of dollars on renovation projects and should expect to have a contractor who is competent in the work they say can perform. James Devitt Construction falls way short of that!
Once again Stephen, I am glad that I was able to complete the tile work to your satisfaction and that we are still working on more projects around your home.
Our master shower was leaking and water damaged the living room ceiling. My husband thought it could be fixed with some caulk around the drain but unfortunately that did not work.
I reached out to Steve Edan, who has done work for me before. He came over and assessed the situation. He told me what the most probable cause could be. He did a water test in the shower to confirm that it was the shower floor liner that was leaking. Unfortunately, it was not an easy fix, as the whole floor and some wall tiles needed to be removed. A semi big job! Steve quoted a price and I agreed to have the work done. The floor and sub floor were removed and the new sub floor installed and leveled with the waterproofing and drain. The most difficult part for us was to find a floor tile that would work with our existing wall tiles. Steve did an excellent job of finding a tile that went well with the existing tiles. We actually prefer the new tile to the old one. The re-build went well and came in at the quoted price. Steve even sealed some of the fixtures where the caulk had come off.
We are using the shower every day for almost a month and no leaks!
I count myself lucky to have found Steve. I find him to be very honest trustworthy and his work is of a high standard. I most definitely will call Steve again for any future projects big or small.
Hi Jackie. Thank you for taking the time to write a review for my service. Your kind words are very appreciated! It is always a pleasure to work with you and your family. I am glad we continue to work together. That shower floor took quite a bit of work to get it right, from ripping up the sub-floor and leveling the joists to finally laying the tiles. It came out really nice!
Steve did a fabulous job of gutting the previous ensuite washrooms, and rebuilt them with new ones by installing all new tiles on the floors; and the floors, walls, and ceilings of the two showers; raised the ceilings; replaced and installed new modern efficient shower doors, ceiling lights and great shower plumbing, new efficient toilets; new vanities and linen compartments and plumbing; painted the walls and ceilings of both rooms; and did the same for the powder room; helped me have an outdoor roof balcony efficiently replaced.
Steve is very meticulous in his work and has to get it right. He is neat and cleans up.
He is very personable, friendly, wants to please and get the job done right the first time.
I recommend Steve highly and want him to continue with other renovation and repair projects at our home.

We had a variety of home repairs that needed to be completed quickly, including drywall repair, bathroom vanity and faucet installation, clostet door installation and more. We were thrilled to find Steve. He was professional, reliable and his work was excellent. When we had questions about how a repair would be completed, Steve always had a sensible solution to the problem. Steve was able to complete all of our repairs in a reasonable amount of time and for a very reasonable price. I would not hesitate to hire Steve again.
Steve was excellent in getting the job done. He changed my vanity and bathroom fixtures for the bathroom in my basement apartment. He has also done a number of various jobs around my how including replacing drywall, fixing lattice fence and bathroom plumbing issues.
Steve is not only a nice guy but, also a great contractor. He is honest and stays within the allotted budget. We had him come over to tear out and rebuild a coat cupboard by the front door because of condensation on the walls. He also took care of a couple of electrical issues while he was here. He hooked me up with a roofer and a window and door guy both of whom did excellent work. He is coming back to break open the basement floor and repair a cracked waste water pipe and I have every confidence that he will do a great job as usual. It took us a while to find a contractor that we felt comfortable with, but it was worth the trouble. I would highly recommend Steve.

I have used Edan Home Repair and Contracting for several projects around my home. Recently he completed the building of my outdoor shed the same day and in very cold weather. Once again I am very pleased and happy with the work he did for me. I find him to be professional and his suggestions and attention to detail and quality of work exceptional. His rates are competitive and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone. I will most definitely call him again for any future projects that I may have.
