Should we ask for recommendations/reviews from previous customers after deciding on which quote to go with?
Yes, that is the prefered way to go. It's hard to get people to agree to be references, when they get called by everybody a contractor places a bid on.
Hi Polly,
This is the easiest and best way to find out if the contractor is reputable. There should not be any difficulty for any established contractor to come up with a few references (the more the better). You should also review their reviews online at places like handycanadian or homestars but a general google search of the company should help as well.

Hi Polly,
Lets set the perimeters of whats going to happen. You've decided to go ahead with a substainal project in your house, you probaly don't have any prior experience with the contractor. Its is your best interest to know exactly who, your dealing with BEFORE you hand over any moneys.
If your contractor decides to jump ship after you've given him/her any moneys, theres very little you can do without costing you any more money so be cautious.
Cheers
Joe
