My contractor keeps using the term industry standard. How do I make sure the work conforms to industry standards?
One sure way, most often the right way, is to take out a building permit for the work to be done. That way you will have a municipal building inspector look at the job to make sure it is up to code.
If you didn't do that, the other way is to hire an engineer to inspect the job.
You can ask a few other certified tradesmen of their opinion. There is also building envelope engineers you can hire to do a review. Most large scale projects have one that inspects during the construction process.
If you have a contractor using the phrase "this is industry standard," you are probably already in trouble. A good contractor shouldnt have to defend his work at all, it should be obvious. If there are technical and structural questions yes, and inspector will help. But they won't tell you wether you got a quality or high end finish, just a safe one.
