Question about split of work between a carpenter and a painter

We have a bit of a disconnect between how a part of the project would be split between the carpenter and the painter.

The carpenter just built a portico for us, and did NOT caulk / seal all the trim and molding seams. He insists that this is the job of the painter. And the painter seems to think otherwise.

Can any professionals on here say how this is usually done. In a situation like this, who would do the caulking / sealing?

It can be done by either but typically the painter does the dap on the trims and finish work. This is a pretty standard system for us.

In general I would agree with the carpenter. Any trimwork caulking, filling of joints and nail holes etc is executed by the painter usually.

It is the painters job to ensure the final product is perfect.

That being said if the painter has priced this work under the impression that the caulking and filling would be done.. He may charge extra.

Ultimately it is the general contractor and/or your responsibility to ensure that each trade know their responsibilities for the particular project--prior to agreeing to a price.

Noones really wrong here just miscommunication.

Hi,

I would agree that typically this is a painters task as part of their preparation. Sometimes as a GC we help both parties out to fill nail holes and dap trim.

Here in Alberta painters are responsible for caulking between painted surface to painted surface.

Painter. The last touch is always the painter.

I am a licensed Carpenter contractor and have been for 33 years. 99% of the time the carpenter does the carpentry only. The painter does all the caulking nail hole fills Etc unless otherwise stated in his contract.

Hi Sanjay,

Clean habits here we deal with this all the time and it would depend on what you agreed with your Painter and Carpenter. But normally the Painter is the one that takes control of all this.

Thank you so much,

The misc. tie inns between subtrades can be difficult. Some carpenters only build, some painters only paint.

As a contractor who hires trades, I always ask what is included. This is why costs for subtrades will very depending on what the scope of work is. I would ask the painter to caulk and fill as it will reflect on the finish product.

There is the cost of construction. Cost for paint prep. Cost for painting. Last but not least. Cost for clean up and removal of debris.

It depends who u want to do it Usually its my self, the carpenter.

Sometimes the painter does it. All depends on who wants the responsibility. Otherwise, do it yourself save $

I would say that it is the carpenters duty to do the kaulking and seem+hole filling. We see it this way.

- Carpenter; plan, measure, install and fill seems and holes, and kaulk trim. (This is for a new install, having the trim ready for paint...)

- Painter; to tape and paint... on trim let's say that has just been installed. But on job where the trim had already been installed for a length of time (however long it may be is doesn't matter)

Then should the painter be in charge of the kaulking, and seem work. Seeing that it is considered a stand alone job with no other trades involved.

To me this comparison seems sensible also.

If a mudder is not a painter. He will not call the painter to do the sanding so that he (the painter that is) could prepaid to paint.

Hope this helps!

Typically this is the responsibility of the painter.

If your painter is giving you a hard time, he's is not a true professional. Find another painter.

Any of then can do this job based on your detailed agreement if you have one. However most of the time the painter has to take care of it.
