I have a 36" opening in a load bearing wall, (10 ft wall) that I am thinking of widening to 5 or 6 feet.
Taking into account, permits and drawings by a structure engineer, what type of expense would I be looking at?
What I would suggest is get two estimates from reputable renovation framers.
There could be other issues involved such as the support of the bearing wall: is it supported by posts (underneath), is the support for the wall on a continual footing etc.
Sometimes what may seem to be a simple job, may turn out to be more complex than one thinks or could be the opposite.
Not knowing what your region demands, is a variable onto itself. Get people who know your codes to give you the estimates. They also know what will be required by the region as far as permits and drawings.
